I am often asked, "What is the difference between intarsia and segmentation projects for the scroll saw?" The above pattern is a hybrid between segmentation and intarsia.
Segmentation is typically cut from a single species of wood. The pattern is applied to the board and cut out like a puzzle. The pieces are then contour sanded and glued to a backer board. Occasionally, the individual pieces are painted/stained to add color to the final image.
Intarsia often involves many different species of wood. The color and grain pattern of the wood is used to enhance the realism of the final image. Intarsia often involves a greater depth of sanding and the pieces can be of different thicknesses to give more depth to the final image.
The eagle is a segmentation pattern but in the rendering, I show it with two different species of wood. If you choose to do the pattern this way then you will need to cut the five lighter species of wood separately and sand to fit.
