I did something for the first time with this pattern. I used Microsoft Edge's Artificial Intelligence art generator plugin(DALL-E) to make all the reference art for this pattern. I needed a crane, lighthouse, fish, birds, sailboat, and cloud for the pattern.
The next image shows the AI-generated art that I used. As you can see I needed to do some editing but the reference art worked fine. This is a big deal for pattern designers/artists because reference art needs to be sourced from non-copyrighted sources or created personally. AI generated this art in a few minutes without me having to go look for it. There will be some challenges to the legal rights of AI-generated art but that will take a few years.
I edited the reference art into a pattern.
AI-Generated Scroll Saw Pattern is a fail for now.
So how long until I am out of a job creating scroll saw patterns? We are not there yet but it is coming. Soon AI will be able to generate art by the thousands in only minutes. It has taken me 16 years to generate a few thousand scroll saw patterns.
I ask AI to "Make a black and white line drawing scroll saw pattern of a boat." The image below is what it came up with. It does not work as a scroll saw pattern but it is not off by much. With proper training, AI will be able to generate any pattern, of any complexity in seconds.
The good news is that AI will also create new jobs as it eliminates old ones. Writing the correct prompts to get AI to do what you want is still somewhat complicated. For a short time, people who learn to generate good prompts will have an advantage and be in demand. That probably won't last too long before AI gets better and understand simpler prompts.
ChatGPT 4 has already passed the Bar exam with flying colors. That required more than just structured data. It required the ability to reason out the questions. The ability of AI to be creative and reason out tough situations will be interesting to watch. Advancements are coming fast. Creativity will no longer be the domain of humans.
Here are a couple more prompts, "Generate a scroll saw portrait pattern of a man in the military."
It would not take much editing to turn this into a pattern.
One more prompt, "Generate a line drawing scroll saw pattern of a fish in a fish bowl."
These are pretty close.
I have watched dozens of hours of videos on the subject of AI. I have set through long lectures on the subject and I'll be honest. I have no idea how this is going to turn out. Technology often disappoints by not meeting expectations. The expectations of this technology are so far out there that I can't even grasp the thought process. In the meantime I'll keep designing scroll saw patterns if you will keep downloading them. :)
One last example. Here is a link to a rock, paper, scissors game I developed using AI. It does all of the coding. I only added the graphics. Basically, I did nothing of value. AI already understood the concept of the game. I prompted it to have it play until the score of five. I know the game is simple but this is pretty incredible that it did this so well.
