This vase is 10.25" tall. The front and back layers are 1/4" thick but you can change that if needed. The three middle layers are each 3/4" thick. The vase is just a little over 6.25" wide so you should be able to find a board fairly easily that has this width.
The more accurately you cut the less sanding you will need to do. I kept most of the curves wide so you can get a sanding drum in there to make the sanding much faster. The bottom base curve will require some hand sanding so cut as accurately as possible in that area.
Charles is one of the finest portrait-style scroll saw pattern designers in the world. He has been designing this type of pattern for many years and has mastered his technique. One of the reasons that his patterns are so beautiful is that he creates them with pen and paper. The computer is only used at the very end of the process to piece the sections together.
The handwork gives his patterns a very natural look. It is very time intensive to design patterns this way but he makes it look easy.
These two videos are well over an hour long but if you are interested in designing this type of pattern you will be learning from the best.
Below is one of my favorite patterns by Charles. You can see what I am talking about in his hand tracing the pattern. It is just very natural. Not to mention that Charles is an expert with spiral blades and is able to cut large patterns flawlessly.
