Father's Day is the third Sunday in June. Many countries celebrate fathers on this same date. It is less than a week away. This Dad Gnome is about 8" tall. He is cut from 1/4" thick wood.
My Dad
I will definitely be remembering and honoring my father on Father's Day. He passed away almost 56 years ago and I miss him greatly. I was ten years old when he passed so I was able to have lots of good memories of our short time together.
My dad worked for Mr. Kresge, the founder of Kmart. In those days most Kmarts had a grocery store attached to the department store. We traveled around Indiana opening all the Kmart grocery stores. Many times we would only live in a city for a few months then on to the next opening.
Dad was a very hard worker and spent lots of hours at the stores. He would let me come and spend time with him at the store. My sister and I would make forts with the boxes in the back room. Sometimes he would let us help with simple tasks like stacking returned Coke bottles. If we did a good job he would pay us with a toy off the rack or a treat.
One event that happened at the store is something I have always remembered. We were sitting in the front office with my dad. An employee came up to the window and told my dad there was a shoplifter in the store. The employee pointed out an elderly woman. My dad told the employee to ignore the lady and let her leave. He knew that she was having trouble with money and trying to raise her grandchildren alone. She came in every week and he never stopped her. I have always remembered that kindness.
My dad loved to smoke big cigars. I don't have many things that belonged to my dad but I do have an old cigar box that was his. It holds a bible that my grandmother gave me as a child. Those are both very special to me. Kind of an odd combination but still special to me.
If you still have your dad around I hope you can spend some special time with him. If like me, your father has passed then I hope you also have some special memories like the ones I shared above.
