Both of these patterns are large. The Motorcycle pattern is extra large at just under 16" wide. The car pattern is 12.25" wide. Both patterns call for 1/4" thick wood. Plywood is the best choice for the motorcycle pattern because of its size.
Baltic Birch Plywood.
There are many types of plywood on the market. Some work well on the scroll saw and others perform poorly. The most common problem with plywood is tear-out on the back side of the cut. I have seen this get so bad that the plies will delaminate.
Some folks do use plywood that they get from the big box stores so you can give them a try. Many folks have had good luck with the plywood from Lowes by the name of RevolutionPly. (Sticker Below) I have not tried this brand but it is not terribly expensive and you can get it in 4' X 8' sheets. They will cut it down to size if you ask.
I personally use Baltic Birch plywood. It is considered one of the most stable plywoods on the market. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find. I buy mine online from
They sell BB ply in multiple sizes and thicknesses.
Ten 12" X 12" X 1/4" sheets cost $18 and to my house in Indiana, the shipping is $7.11. 50 sheets totals out at $125.81 including shipping.
One thing to remember is that none of these plywoods are actually 1/4" thick. Some patterns may need to be adjusted to the ply size you purchase.
$12 per sheet of 12 coins plus $3.50 shipping
