Boxing has ancient roots dating back to around 3000 BC, with evidence found in Sumerian relief carvings and ancient Egyptian artwork depicting early forms of fist-fighting. The sport took a more formal shape in Ancient Greece, where it was included in the Olympic Games in 688 BC. Greek boxing was brutal and lacked rounds or weight classes, often continuing until one fighter could no longer continue. Romans later adapted Greek boxing, adding leather straps with metal inserts called cestus to increase damage, making fights even more dangerous.
Modern boxing began evolving in England in the 17th and 18th centuries with the introduction of structured rules to improve safety and fairness. Notably, the Marquess of Queensberry Rules established in 1867 mandated gloves, three-minute rounds, and a ten-second knockout count, fundamentally shaping the sport as we know it today. Boxing surged in popularity during the 20th century, producing legendary champions like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson, becoming a global phenomenon and a staple of international sports culture.
