I have two more patterns for you today. The first one is a decorative Owl pattern. It is 8" wide and calls for 1/4" and 3/4" thick wood. This is one of those patterns where the 3/4" thick wood can be changed to any thickness you have available.
The Santa pattern is 8" wide and cut from 1/4" thick wood.
I receive several emails asking how long it takes to design the patterns I post. Keep in mind that I have been designing patterns almost daily for over 18 years. I generally start the process at 10pm the night before the pattern is posted. I am a night owl, so I work almost entirely at night.
The first step is deciding on a theme/subject for the pattern. That time varies quite a bit. Some nights, my brain goes into lockdown, and the subject takes several minutes or longer. This time of year, with the holidays, it is easy to come up with a subject.
Once I have the subject, I start the computer design. I use CorelDRAW for all my pattern designs. I have used this software for over 20 years, so I am confident with it. I use clipart for the base designs. In the past, it could take hours of searching the web for copyright-free clip art. My blog is closely monitored for copyright violations, so I have to be careful. Now, with the use of AI, I can generate copyright-free clipart in minutes. The clipart is just the beginning stage because it always needs major changes to make it into a pattern.
For a pattern like today's owl, it takes a little longer because the owl was not generated with the vines. I generate all of those elements separately and combine them in CorelDRAW. Occasionally, I complete a pattern and decide I don't like it. I just delete it and start over.
Most nights, my dog wakes up in the middle of the night around 2am, and after taking care of her business, she wants to play. At that point, I have two options. Keep working while she sits and stares a hole through me, or take a break and play with her. That is really just one option because her stare is unending.
So, with lots of breaks and getting distracted, a pattern averages about two and a half hours to complete. After it is complete, the less fun part starts. I have to convert the pattern to a PDF file and upload it to my server. Then I go to Blogger and create the blog post. I am a terrible writer, so this can be difficult for me. If my high school English teacher knew that I earn a living writing a blog, she would roll over in her grave. I know that my grammar is poor, so I use an add-on named Grammarly to actually put commas in the correct place and correct my spelling. The bigger problem is my sentence structure. Sometimes I let AI correct that problem, but it tends to use words and structure that sound nothing like me, so I avoid that as much as possible.
I typically go to bed around 4am. I have worked on the blog from 10pm until 4am, but with several breaks and distractions, those six hours are probably around five hours of work, give or take.
