Let go BIG. Yes, it really is 48" wide and 40" tall. This Horse Mosaic is made up of 88 mostly straight-edge pieces. I have included a numbered diagram in the pattern, so assembly will be less of a problem. This project will require plywood because it is so large. Remember that plywood will dull scroll saw blades quickly, so have a good supply handy.
The straight edges actually make assembly easier. Just keep a 1/8" gap between the pieces, and assembly should go smoothly. I would start with a piece close to the edges of the backer board. Measure the distance from the edge of the backer to the start part. Lay all the parts out without glue. Once the horse is correctly positioned, you can lift an individual part and glue it in place. Do that 88 times and you will get it done.
Let's go SMALL. The Necklace Brooch is only 1.5" tall. The backer is cut from 1/4" or 1/8" for the back, and the floral decoration is 1/8" thick. You will want to use nice contrasting hardwoods for a project like this. You will also want to do a good job sanding so there are no sharp edges. Then apply a high gloss finish to set it off.
