I received an email from a reader asking me what sanders I use in my shop. I have several and sent her the list. She emailed me back and ask which one was the most useful. That was a difficult choice but I think the 12-inch disc sander is where I would start.
I have owned the Rikon Disc sander for a few years. Before I bought this 12-inch sander I used a combination belt/disc sander. The Disc on that entry-level machine was 6 inches and not very useful.
The Rikon 12-inch disc gets the job done in a hurry with its 1/2HP motor. I use this machine a lot and it has been very reliable.
The rack and pinion table adjustment is solid and works well. The included dust port does a better job than I expected for a machine that loves to make dust. The table is nice and large which is always a plus. The included miter gauge is only so-so but honestly, I don't use it much anyway.
It took me a while to upgrade to this sander because the price is a bit steep at $299 but it has been worth the investment for me. I use it on almost every project so the I need something that will hold up. The Rikon has done well for me.
If you are looking to move up to a better disc sander then take a look at the Rikon.
While you are at it pick up one of these abrasive belt and disc cleaners. If you do not have one of these you need one for all your sanding belts and discs. They keep the sand paper like new.
