Salt, Pepper, and Napkin Holder Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

This pattern is cut from 1/4" thick soft maple. When I am cutting text I like to use a lighter color species of woo. The letters seem to show up better.

The cutouts for the salt and pepper shakers are two inches in diameter. Check the shakers you use before you commit to the size of the cutout and make adjustments if necessary.

The pattern has eight different sayings and one blank. The blank is used to the back and can also be used to customize your own words. If you just want a simple pattern use the blank for both the front and back without the words.

Peel&Stick or Blue Painter's Tape?

I want to clear up some confusion. I use tape under all my patterns. I know that not everyone likes tape but I prefer and recommend it. It makes the patterns easier to remove and helps lubricate the blade. That is not what I want to discuss, however. Use whatever technique you prefer.

I have received a few emails lately asking why I no longer use the Peel&Stick clear laminate under my patterns. They have seen me use the blue painter's tape in a video or heard me mention the blue painter's tape on the blog.

The answer is that I use both. I do a lot of stack cutting and I prefer the blue painter's tape for those jobs. I just wrap my stack of boards in the blue tape and apply the pattern. The blue tape serves two purposes. It holds the stack together and the normal easy removal and lubricant.

The Peel&Stick comes in twelve inch wide rolls. That makes it perfect for large boards. It works almost as well as blue tape and covers large areas fast. It is not so great for wrapping around a stack of boards.

I also sometimes use blue tape on smaller single board projects just because it is a habit. I have used the blue tape for so many years that I just grab it without thinking. Then when I try to cover a large area I ask myself why I did not get the Peel&Stick. Old habits are hard to break.

For those of you who may not know about the Peel&Stick, it is a clear shelf liner that comes in a roll. I buy the 12" wide rolls. I think the roll is 36" long. You can use it under a scroll saw pattern just like box tape or blue tape. It is less expensive than the blue tape and like I said it covers large areas fast.

I would say it is about 95% as effective and blue tape. When I do very fine fretwork the Peel&Stick will sometimes lift a little. It's not bad but just not a sticky as blue tape. For normal fretwork, it works great.

It is also available from Walmart as a single roll. I did notice that the price at Walmart has gone up. It used to be under $9 a roll but now is listed $14.89. That is probably still less expensive than blue tape but getting close. That makes the four-pack at Amazon look pretty good.
