These guys just heisted a bucket of honey and are on the run. Yogi would be proud.
This pair of honey rustling bears is about seven inches tall. I was originally going to paint them black to make a silhouette project but I like them better natural. I probably should have used walnut. The Baltic birch kind of makes them look like polar bears. :)
This project is all 1/4" thick Baltic birch plywood. This project will be fin cut from almost any scrap you have handy. Don't worry over the thickness of the wood.
Magnifying light for your scroll saw: From Bear Woods.
Magnifying lamps are a real advantage when scrolling small patterns. You can mount them on the side of your saw and use the light alone or add the lens over the patterns when needed.
I use mine for the light more than I use the magnifying lens but when I need the magnification I have it handy. I always use the lens when cutting coins. I know some guys who cut every day and they always use magnification. They say it makes them more accurate. That makes perfect sense especially for those of us who are getting older.
Not all mag lamps are the same. Some of the inexpensive ones like to see in a dollar store will have very blurry edges when looking through the lens. They may also have trouble holding their place once set.
I have purchased several different brands from different price ranges. Some have been terrible. I bought one that the light was so dim it was unusable. It was well over $100. It went back.
My friends over a Bear Woods carry two lamps that work quite well and are priced near the middle of the range. They have one with an LED lamp and a less expensive version with a circular fluorescent lamp. I have one of their fluorescent models and like it a lot. I plan to pick up one of their LED models soon. The fluorescent model is fine but I prefer the daylight lights from the LEDs better. Both models are well made and the lens is good. They hold their position without any trouble.
Keep in mind that none of the lenses are perfect. You will always get a little distortion around the perimeter. Just understand that when you are cutting you concentrate where the blade is cutting the wood. That is a small area in the middle of the lens.
