Basket Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

It has been a while since I published a basket pattern. This one is cut from 1/2" maple for the weaves and 1/4" walnut for the bottom and rim. I also use 1/8" diameter wooden dowels for the stakes of the basket. If you would like to have more layers for the weave then cut them from 1/4" thick wood and double the count. The basket is 2.5" tall. You can change the height by cutting extra layers.

This basket is five inches in diameter.

If you want a large basket then have the pattern enlarged to 8.25 inches in diameter. At that size, you can use 1/4" wooden dowels. The dowels will be tight so cut inside the pattern line just a little to give more room for the dowels. The 8.25-inch basket is going to use a lot of wood though.

I cut 28, 1/8" wooden dowels for the basket stakes.

A dot of glue at each end of the stakes will hold them in place. Once the rim is glued on they will be secure.

Make it Smooth!

I use a lot of spray finish on my scroll saw patterns. It is easy to apply and dries very quickly. I can usually go from spray to photo in 20 minutes. It cures overnight.

It has a couple of disadvantages also. One problem is that it can be difficult to get the spray inside all the small interior cuts. It helps to use several very light coats and let it build up. You can apply a coat every few minutes. If you try to coat all the interior cuts too fast you will over coat the surface and have runs of finish.

The second issue is the feel of the project after it is finished. Spray finishes can leave a bumpy/gritty feel. You can get it to a glass smooth finish with 0000 steel wool. After the finish has dried brush over it lightly with the steel wool. It does not take much pressure. Just a light scuffing. After you get it smooth make sure you blow off any residual steel wool that hangs on the project.

I have used other abrasives to smooth out spray finish but the 0000 steel wool has worked best for me. Some people have had good luck with brown paper bags as an abrasive.

I am not saying this is the best way to finish a scroll saw project. I am just suggesting that steel wool helps if you use aerosol spray finishes.
