This string clock is cut from 1/2" thick walnut. The clock insert is a 2 7/8" clock with a 2 3/8" mounting hole. The string is fishing line.
When I was designing this clock I knew that keeping the center clock mount centered might be difficult. To prevent the problem I made four centering jigs that I included in the pattern. They are cut
from 1/4" thick Baltic birch plywood. These jigs make threading the line easy and keeps the clock centered. You can see the jigs in the photos below.
I used an awl to mark all the string holes. This helps keep all the holes in the correct spot.
I cut the clock mounting hole with a 2 7/8" Forstner bit. These large bits are expensive but you can cut the mounting hole with your scroll saw. Make sure you cut just inside the pattern line so you get a snug fit for the clock. It is difficult to put wood back on.
In the photo above you can see the four centering jigs. Place them across from each other and in between the string holes. Cut the jigs carefully so you get a snug fit. If they end up loose just use a spot of hot glue to temporarily hold them in place.
You need about nine feet of line. Tie a large knot in one end and start threading from the back of the clock.
I used a spot of CA glue and activator to hold the knot in place.
Thread the line back and forth being careful not to move the centering jigs.
I used CA glue and Activator to hold the other end of the line to the back of the clock. You could also use a small screw to make sure the line does not come off.
I used spray acrylic to finish the clock. I sprayed the fishing line along with the clock. I was afraid it might stay sticky on the line but it did dry.

These ads play a significant part in allowing me to keep the blog open. I know some folks hate ads but they make the world go around. I frequently am asked to remove the ads from the newsletter. I can remove the ads but that would also remove the newsletter. The email newsletter alone costs about $200 a month to send out. Half a million emails are not cheap.
I will always try to add value to the blog posts. I appreciate your support and I totally understand if you unsubscribe to the newsletter if you don't want to see the ads. There is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email newsletter.
I had an individual email me and let me know how bad it was to include ads. He said he was unsubscribing because of the ads. Then he asked if I would send him the daily free patterns after he unsubscribed. That is what prompted this disclaimer. By the way, I said no. :)
