I'm still working on workshop items. My table saw push sticks were all cut to shreds so it was time to cut more. This push stick is 12" long. The angle is set so your hand is still well above the table saw blade at max blade height.
The blade of the push stick is thin for narrow cuts between the table saw blade and the fence. The handle is 3/4" thick for a comfortable grip.
Table saws for scrollers: What do you need?
Lowest price in a while.
Many of you are just getting into the scroll saw hobby. Other than hand tools you may not have other power tools like a table saw. Do you need a table saw to enjoy the scroll saw hobby? If you need one does it have to cost thousands of dollars?
The answer to the first question is maybe. The answer to the second question is no.
You can use the scroll saw and never own a table saw. You just have to find boards that are already cut to the dimensions you need for your projects. That is possible but can be difficult. A table saw will allow you to cut boards down to a manageable size for the scroll saw. Other tools can do this also but the table saw is the easiest.
If your plans do not include building high-end furniture then you don't need to spend $3000+ dollars for a Saw Stop table saw. Actually, even a decent contractor saw can cut pretty accurately if it is set up properly.
The DeWalt table saw you see in the ad above is called a job site saw. As the name implies it is mostly used on construction sites. It is portable and easy to move and set up. It can absolutely be used in a home workshop to cut boards down to size and even build projects that need some accuracy. For $299 you can have a table saw that can be easily stored out of way and still get the job done for a scroller.
Some woodworkers even take these job site saws to the next level as seen in the photo below.
There are many table saws between the job site saws and the large cabinet saws I spoke about above. I still use an old craftsman contractor saw. I think I spent around $700 twenty years ago on it. The prices on these contractor saws are still in the $700 to $1500 range. Both the job site saws and the contractor saws usually have poor dust collection so that needs to be considered.
The next step up from the contractor table saw is the hybrid table saw. This is a combination of the benefits of the contractor saw and cabinet saw. They run in the $1500+ range. You are starting to get serious and taking the hobby to the next level for a price that is much less than a fully decked-out cabinet saw. Cabinet saws can run in the thousands of dollars like the Saw Stop in the ad above and much more.
Not all job site saws are created equal. Some of the very inexpensive job site saws are of pretty poor quality. I'm not saying they can't be used but you can mostly forget about accuracy. You can get a low-end saw for under $150. Harbor Freight sells the Chicago Electric and the Warrior brands and both are under $150.
Table saws are serious tools. You want to make sure you understand how to use the tool safely before you ever hit the switch. The manual will often give some basic information but taking a class will often be more helpful.
