Remember to check that the child is age-appropriate for this toy. Here is a link to a very long video discussing picking an age-appropriate toy. Video Link: The video is long but a young mother may appreciate the insight.
Remember when we were children. We played with BB guns and metal-tipped lawn darts. Somehow we survived but we also became more educated as we aged and keeping the children safe is very important. If you build toys just use good judgment and if you are not sure then err on the side of safety.
This toy Biplane model is cut from 1/4" thick wood. There are 11 parts and not many difficult interior cuts. I would say that it is at the top of the beginner level but not quite the intermediate level.
This is a video from the 2018 Oshkosh Air Show. It features Kyle Franklin and his Dracula Biplane. The eleven-minute show is spectacular. Kyle is one of the best stunt pilots around and this video shows some of his skills. If you enjoy aviation you will like this video.
The numbers for woodworking in general are 92% men and 8% women in commercial woodworking. The numbers are probably a little different in hobby woodworking but not by much. If my blog demographic is representative of the community our demographics are 18% women and 82% men. I believe these numbers are close because it is drawn from a large sample.
Why is this important? A poll by Business Insider found that women are twice as likely to purchase a handmade product or craft item. Personally, I believe that these numbers may be off if you just consider traditional craft items. I think those are probably closer to 80/20 Women vs men.
Having a larger influence of women in our hobby drives the end product to be more in line with the main people who will purchase the product. If you are, or plan to start selling crafts you want to make items that are what the people want to buy.
My wife often tells me that I don't design enough patterns for women and children. I have thousands of patterns so there are many for both genders and children but in general, she is correct. Some of the finest pattern designers in our happy are women. Sheila Landry and Sue Mey are two excellent examples. They are both fantastic at pattern design in general but also make great decisions on the style of their patterns to make them desirable to the people who buy crafts.
I appreciate all the women who visit my blog and thank them for making our hobby better for everyone.
