In our part of the world, we are quickly heading toward fall. Just a little over a month. We have had a hotter than normal summer so I am ready for some fall temperatures.
Gnomes are still a popular craft item. Just visit Etsy.com and you will find pages of Gnome crafts for sale. This gnome pattern is 10" tall and almost 14" wide.
The Cross pattern is 10.25" tall and 7.5" wide. It has two layers. You can use just about any thickness of wood you have but the pattern calls for the front layer to be 1/2" thick and the back layer to be 1/4" thick
Shore Bird Video by Artisan Pirate
Tyler cuts one of my patterns and does a nice job as always. In this video, he cuts my Shore Bird pattern using 1/2" thick construction-grade plywood. The scroll saw is capable of cutting many types of material. Construction-grade plywood is not one of my favorites but this project turned out nice so it works.
Sometimes a rustic look is perfect for a pattern and this pattern fits that criteria. Let's face it hardwoods are costly. If you cut regularly then the cost can add up quickly. Don't rule out less expensive material. You may get some backside tear out but that can be minimized by adding tape to the back. Just apply the pattern and wrap the board in clear packing tape.
You will occasionally run into what I call punky wood. No matter what you do the cuts will not be good. You will have to deal with that issue but depending on the pattern it may not matter much.
