This little hot dog is over 11" long. He holds three tea light candles.
I used a 1.5" Forstner bit to drill the recesses to hold the candles. If you do not have a Forstner bith then you have a couple of options. Instead of using 1/2" thick wood for the candle shelf, use two 1/4" thick boards, cut the 1.5" holes in one board and glue it to the other board to create the recesses.
If you don't like that option I included three rings with the pattern. You can cut these rings and glue them to the shelf. Those will hold the dandles in place.
One more time..... Do not burn candles unattended. Use electric candles for unattended use. Keep burning candles away from small children, pets, and clumsy adults.
Why would you use a Reverse Tooth Blade? Basic Tip.
My recommendation for cutting fretwork is to use a reverse tooth blade whenever possible. The reverse tooth blade produces a cleaner cut on the backside of the board. This means less sanding. Sanding to remove errors in the cut is not preferable. It is better if you can prevent errors in the first place.
What is the difference between a standard blade and a reverse tooth blade?
A standard blade has all the teeth pointing in the same direction. These blades are installed in the saw with the teeth pointing down. As these teeth exit the bottom of the board they push the fibers down and do not cut them off cleanly. This leaves the backside with what we call fuzzies.
To help reduce the fuzzies blade manufacturers designed a blade with the bottom section of the teeth pointing up. These upward pointing teeth try to shear off the fuzzies that are produced by the downward pointing teeth. The bottom teeth are not 100% effective so you will often still have a small number of fuzzies but they will be greatly reduced.
There are different formats of reverse tooth blades from different manufacturers. The reverse teeth on all of these blades do basically the same thing. The layout of the teeth can make the aggressiveness of the blade different.
My two favorite reverse teeth blades are the Pegas Modified Geometry and the Flying Dutchman/Niqua Ultra Reverse. This is just my preference. Not everyone cuts the same way or has the same feel for the cut. You should try different blades to see what works for you.
When cutting specialty materials on the scroll saw then the choice of blades gets smaller. If you are cutting aluminum then you obviously don't have splintering as a concern. You need to use a metal cutting blade. They have a high number of teeth per inch and all the teeth are pointing down. That is just one example. I just say this so you know that reverse teeth blades are not appropriate in all situations.
